When typewriters were used, spaces were adequate because they remained constant. Now that we use computers and proportional fonts, the distance between entries using spaces will change depending on the font you use. Also, on the computer screen, spaces make your second column of entries look straight, but often, when you print the page, the entries are jagged. Tabs remain constant and your columns are always in a straight line no matter what font you use.
