Preparing
page layout is a complicated process and many times the final product
is fragile. In making changes, I am more likely than the author (no offense
intended) to be able to avoid disturbing (or in some extreme cases destroying)
the page layout. For instance, I worked on a manuscript that had some
complicated graphics anchored to certain paragraphs. When the author tried
to make some changes, many of the graphics floated off to other pages
and were in the wrong place. Others just disappeared and could not be
retrieved. Using the "reveal codes" feature in WordPerfect,
I can very carefully add or delete text without disturbing the page layout,
or if the layout has to be re-done in the rest of the chapter to accommodate
the changes, I can do this quickly. Therefore, to safeguard the page layout,
I only exchange hard copy with authors until the end of the project. Then,
they may have an electronic form of the book if they wish. Frequently
