The most common mistake authors make is to prepare the index prematurely, and the most common question I am asked is, "Can I start the index now?" (Actually, this is a welcome question as many authors rush ahead and then casually announce that they are half-way through the index. I quietly cringe.) While I appreciate the enthusiasm of authors who want to get started on their indexes, it can be a big mistake. There is nothing as disheartening as having to do the index a second time or having to "live" with a mistake found in the book because it is too expensive or time consuming to do the index again. The index is the very last thing you do before sending the book to the publisher.
